The planned construction in 2010 for internet services for Ivanhoe Lake inhabitants have been cancelled for lack of funds. There will be no such services for Ivanhoe Lake for the foreseeable future.
The only alternative is with a Satellite dish and Explornet if you wish higher speed internet. Dial up being the other. We are sorry to report this and we suspect one of the reasons is the seasonal aspect of the Ivanhoe Lake population, there being only about a dozen residents that call Ivanhoe their year long home.
The cellphone service is on track for construction for this summer, but may not be available until 2011.
The less than normal snowfall this past winter is resulting a low water run off causing a problem to bring back the level of the lake to normal level. The lake was drawn down during the winter to handle a normal run off, which will not happen. In conversations with the MNR and agency OCWA who operate the water plant at Foleyet are aware of the problem and will work to minimize the amount of water that the water plant needs if a drought happens this summer. The water plant operators are prepared to go in a manual mode requiring the least amount of water from the river to supply Foleyet with water, while maintaining the best possible level for Ivanhoe Lake. More information on this will be given at our meeting in May.
We all hope that rainlfall will be plentiful to bring the lake back up to a normal level for the enjoyment of everyone at Ivanhoe, including the provincial park.

We have received information from MNR Chapleau on July 21st that the Foleyet Metis Pathfinders have agreed to include septage drying trenches in the proposed new WDS (dump) for Foleyet that is still in the planning stages.
MNR advises that if the new dump site has room for septage trenches, it looks promising that it will be done, saving the Association of developing a site on our own and at our own expense. In light of this late development, our septage disposal Ctee has agreed that we will pursue no further our efforts to get our own site and have wished Craig Montgomery of the MNR well in his efforts to establish a new WDS for Foleyet including septage drying trenches for use of Ivanhoe Lake inhabitants, tourist outfitters and provincial park, as well as others who may wish to use the proposed new site.
The septage trenches being included in the WDS means that the Association will not incur any costs. Cottagers would of course pay a pumping company to pump their tanks, and being that dumping would be available close, the cost of pumping our tanks should be very reasonable compared to our present situtation.
Further information will be given at our next meeting in September and more details on this website when available.

Information on the waste disposal sites at Foleyet, Horwood Lake, Sewel Lake and Star Lake here
MNR invited the residents of Foleyet to a meeting on June 24, 2008. At that meeting those in attendance were given information that is very interesting. Because Ivanhoe Lake residents use the Foleyet Dump, this makes important reading and is of concern to Ivanhoe Lake. A waste disposal site can be general garbage as well as sewage. Please read to understand the implications and problems that can affect the inhabitants of Ivanhoe Lake. Click here.

Keeping our lake clean and healthy is very important. Even a slightly unhealthy water (pollution) could decrease our property values, as well as diminishing recreational pleasures on Ivanhoe.
From British Columbia Government Excerpt, quote:
"Improperly maintained septic systems can impact the economic health of the community. Failed septic systems can reduce
property values and contribute to the pollution of local waterbodies used for commercial and recreational activities"

Your Septic System: An article by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) that explains how your septic system works, why the leaching bed should be located above the ground water, that a tank should be pumped when 1/3 of the tank if filled with sludge or close to the ports in the separation wall (see definitions for more detail), how a tank flled with sludge will clog your weeping bed.
Septic tank pumping frequency and definitions: Added July 26, 2009 Taken off the internet with information added from other sources. You should find these articles very useful, especially not relying on rule of thumb frequency when to empty your septic tank. Includes how you can make an actual examination of your tank to determine when the sludge should be pumped out. Most septic tanks have 2 comportments. There are openings about half way (2 feet from the bottom in a 1000 gallons tank} to allow the effluent to go in the second compartment. When the sludge reaches 2 feet in depth in the first compartment is time to have the tank pumped out. This can be done with a clear tube to visually show the depth of the sludge. For more information see definitions. or More information on frequency to empty septic tanks __
CAUTION: When having your septic tank pumped out, clean up any spillage to avoid exposure to children and pets.
When doing any work on a septic system, especially replacing an old metal tank, secure the area and advise your neighbours to especially supervise their children and pets during the work. Dogs or cats exposed to contaminated soil can be very dangerous and even cause death if ingested.

CAUSE FOR CONCERN
On Sunday October 12, 2008 on the shoreline of the lake (near Air Ivanhoe) the water was covered with a green substance for about 3 ft from the shore. Pit Robert took photos and will publish them here. He is contacting the Sudbury Health Unit for more information. A website that contains more information on Algae is http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/ewh-semt/pubs/water-eau/cyanobacter-eng.php and is a Health Canada site. Samples will be taken for analysis to determine if the substance contains cyanobacterial toxins. There are 4 photos. May open too slow for dial up. If opened, will open much faster when revisiting site.

Our Land Tax bill will NOT change much. Very good news . New Land Tax Bills have been received by end of July. Very little changes have been reported. Though the assessments reflect closer to actual values, the tax rate has been lowered resulting in about the same amounts of taxes as paid last year. For Ivanhoe Lake tax rate of .0004 means that for every $100,000.00 assessment on your property will cost you $40.00

Lake water testing email to FOCA
Answer from FOCA on water quality testing
Lake Partner Program
Pit Robert has a water testing kit to test water for phosphorus content this May. The results will be posted when the tests are in.The water in the lake should be tested every year during the month of May. It is hoped another volunteer can continue the yearly testing after Pit is no longer able to do it. A yearly monitoring of the lake water quality is desirable so that any degradation of the water quality (high phosphorus) can prompty be addressed. The testing kit was sent by the Ministry of the Environment, Lake Partner Program, 1026 Bellwood Acres Rd, Box 39, Dorset ON P0A 1E0 after a request to FOCA (Federation of Ontario Cottagers" Associations) was made last fall. The test kit was shown at the meeting on May 17th at Red Pine Lodge for member's information.
